child, adolescent, & young adult psychology FAQs

What role can parents play in their child's therapy process?
Parents play a very important role in their child's therapy process. Prior to the child’s first therapy session, parents meet with the therapist for an intake appointment to provide detailed background information and discuss reasons for seeking therapy. Depending on the age of the child and presenting concerns, parents may also actively participate in treatment. For example, particularly for young children, parent-based interventions may be recommended. Even when children engage more independently in weekly therapy sessions, parents are often provided with specific strategies and training to help them create a supportive environment at home that facilitates their child's emotional and behavioral growth.
What should I expect during my child's first therapy session?
In your child's first session, we’ll create a welcoming environment to make your child feel at ease. We often engage in ice breaker activities to help develop rapport. We also give your child a safe space to share their thoughts and feelings, as well as share any information about areas in which they could use support. This session sets the stage for building a trusting relationship and setting a positive direction for future growth. The information we gather from your child, as well as the information obtained from you during the intake, are part of the initial assessment which guides the treatment plan and recommendations.
What mental health services are available for children and families in Mt. Kisco?
Positive Development Psychology provides a wide range of mental health services for children, adolescents, and families, including therapy for children for anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues, as well as parenting support. Each service is designed to help your child and family navigate and overcome emotional and behavioral challenges effectively.
