Getting Support Through Teletherapy
If you are a parent seeking a therapist for your child or adolescent, you are likely wondering how you are going to fit therapy sessions into your family’s already busy schedule. Between work commitments, school schedules, childcare responsibilities and extra-curricular activities, it can feel impossible to juggle it all. If you are a college student or young adult with a lot on your plate, it can also be hard to find time to travel to therapy as you balance your studies, your social life, and the newfound responsibilities of adulthood.
Perhaps you live in New York City and do not have time to sit in traffic or ride the subway to your therapy appointment. Or, if you live in a more rural area of New York, you may not have as many options for local therapy. Thankfully, with the convenience of online therapy, you can eliminate travel time and feel more at ease opening up to a therapist from your own familiar, comfortable, and private space at home. Teletherapy can provide the tools you or your child need to address anxiety, behavioral issues, parenting challenges, or other concerns. Having the support of a virtual therapist can make it easier to show up in the world as your best self.
Benefits of Virtual Therapy
If you are considering online therapy for yourself or your child, you are likely wondering if teletherapy really works. The good news is that virtual therapy is effective! In fact, most research shows that online therapy is as successful as in-person psychotherapy for addressing a variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety and other challenges. Through virtual therapy, young people and their parents have the opportunity to receive the same evidence-based services and support that are provided in a therapist’s office. Our flexible and convenient teletherapy services are provided through a secure video platform and follow the same agenda as in-person therapy sessions.
Virtual therapy also provides clients with the chance to practice skills in real-life contexts outside of a therapist’s office. For example, for teens struggling with test anxiety, their anxiety may lead them to procrastinate or avoid exam preparation altogether, which only makes the situation worse. With the support of an online therapist, your teen can be guided in anxiety management tools, such as relaxation techniques, mindfulness, challenging unhelpful thoughts that pop into their mind and other strategies, while practicing from their actual study space at home. The next time your teen feels anxious while studying, they will hopefully feel better equipped to apply the coping skills learned.
A strong therapeutic relationship between a client and a therapist contributes to better treatment outcomes. Thankfully, for young people who have grown up in a digital world, communicating through technology is second nature. Being accustomed to interacting socially online may help when building a relationship with a virtual therapist. Young people may also feel more at ease opening up and talking about their feelings or difficult topics from the comfort of home.
Of course, every person and situation is unique and online therapy will not be appropriate for everyone. During the intake evaluation and first few sessions, you and your therapist should assess and discuss whether virtual therapy is a good fit for you or your child.

Online Anxiety Treatment
At Positive Development Psychology, one of our specialties is anxiety treatment. We take great care in making sure that you or your child receive the same effective tools and level of support via teletherapy that you would experience through in-person therapy. Virtual anxiety treatment also provides an excellent opportunity for incorporating exposure therapy into sessions. Exposure is an evidence-based strategy that involves practicing skills and gradually facing feared situations in a safe and supportive environment until anxiety diminishes. Clients can bring their laptop, tablet or phone into anxiety-producing situations within their home or in other real-world environments and receive real-time support from their online therapist.
Regardless of whether you or your child are afraid of animals, have a fear of rejection, worry about a variety of everyday activities, or have some other fear, teletherapy with an anxiety specialist can provide the support you need. In addition to providing individual therapy sessions for those struggling with anxiety, we also offer a parent-based anxiety treatment program that helps children and adolescents with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
