Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of teletherapy?

Most individuals appreciate the convenience of being able to attend therapy sessions from the comfort of their own home. More importantly, most research shows that teletherapy is as effective as in-person psychotherapy for a range of mental health conditions. Virtual therapy sessions occur over HIPAA-compliant video and follow the same agenda as in-person sessions.

Of course, every client and situation is unique and online therapy will not be appropriate for everyone. During the initial phone consultation or at any point after sessions have begun, if we determine that virtual therapy is not an appropriate form of treatment for you or your child, this will be discussed with you. You will be offered an in-person appointment, if possible and appropriate, or be given referrals to another professional.

How do I choose the right therapist?

Choosing a therapist for yourself or your child is a personal decision. Aside from selecting a therapist with an area of expertise that meets your needs, it is also important to feel safe and comfortable with your therapist. A strong therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is known to contribute to better treatment outcomes. We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help determine if we will be a good fit for you or your child.

How do I get started in therapy?

Please contact Positive Development Psychology by filling out the form on our Contact Us page, by emailing us at info@positivedevelopmentpsychology.com, or by calling us at 914-432-4000.

We will start by setting up a free 15-minute phone consultation to gather some initial background information, learn about why you are seeking in-person or online therapy services, and determine if we may be of help.

What can I expect at the beginning of therapy?

Following the free initial phone consultation, you will attend a 90-minute intake session so we can gather a detailed history and learn more about your present concerns. For child and adolescent patients, the parent attends the initial appointment alone. Young adults may attend alone or with a parent or another individual who can assist in providing information. Children and adolescents typically meet with the psychologist during the second appointment. With your permission, we can also gather information from other pertinent sources, such as other providers. Following this initial assessment process, we will be able to identify preliminary treatment goals and recommendations.

Ongoing in-person or online therapy sessions are typically 45 minutes, while parent or family sessions may be longer. You and your psychologist will discuss the frequency and duration of sessions that will best meet your needs.

Do you prescribe medication?

Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Although many individuals benefit from therapy alone, some benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. In those cases, clients can choose to meet with a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication. With your permission, we can consult and work with the psychiatrist to coordinate care.

Do you take insurance?

We are an “out-of-network” provider, meaning we do not participate in any insurance plans. However, we offer a sliding scale (reduced rate options) to try to make services accessible to families who cannot afford our full standard fees. Depending on your out-of-network benefits, you may also be reimbursed for a percentage of the cost of therapy. While you are responsible for payment of fees at the time services are rendered, we can provide you with a monthly receipt so that you can submit it to your insurance company. Call your insurance provider to learn about your out-of-network benefits for mental health (behavioral health) services.

What should I do if I am in a crisis or have an emergency?

Our practice does not provide crisis management services. If you are in danger or have an urgent issue, call 911 or go to your local emergency room.  These resources may also be of help:

What is your cancellation policy?

When you schedule a teletherapy appointment, your psychologist is reserving that time for you. Once an appointment for a session or any other service is scheduled, you will be responsible for payment, unless you provide 48 hours advance notice of cancellation.
