Building Children’s Confidence, Resilience, and Coping Skills
Parenting a child today is not easy, and when emotions are running high, behaviors are becoming more challenging, and it seems like your child is stuck, you are probably wondering what is happening underneath and how to help. At Positive Development Psychology, we support children and adolescents in Chappaqua and the surrounding communities in Westchester to work through emotional, behavioral, or social struggles.
Whatever the issue, from anxiety to behavior problems at home and school, to challenging transitions, our skilled and compassionate therapists offer a safe, supportive space to help children grow and help families move forward together.
Why Seek A Child Therapist?
Children are not always able to explain what they are feeling. Instead, their emotions may show up as tantrums, avoidance, perfectionism, irritability, or physical complaints, like headaches and stomach aches. A child therapist can help your child better understand their feelings, build coping skills, and communicate more effectively, so that emotional and behavioral challenges do not become lasting obstacles. Therapy can be a meaningful reset that helps build skills, confidence, and resilience that stay with your child as they grow.
We often work with families to address concerns such as:
- Anxiety, worries, or fear
- Mood changes or emotional outbursts
- School avoidance or academic stress
- Behavioral challenges
- Difficulty navigating transitions
- Perfectionism or low self-esteem
- Sleep disturbances and separation issues
SPACE Child Anxiety Treatment
We provide SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), a parent-based therapy program, which is designed to treat anxiety and OCD in children and adolescents without their participation in therapy sessions. If your child is resistant to therapy or too young to take an active role in the process, this approach could prove to be most helpful. SPACE therapy is evidence-based and gives power to the family to enable meaningful and sustainable changes. When appropriate, it can also be used at the same time as CBT or other treatments.
In SPACE, we work with you, the parent, to:
- Learn how anxiety presents in children
- Understand how well-intended parent responses may unintentionally maintain child anxiety
- Respond with empathy and confidence in your child’s ability to cope
- Foster child independence and brave behavior
Our Child Therapy Approach for Chappaqua Families
Every child is different, and our approach reflects that. We draw from a variety of research-backed methods that are customized to fit your child’s developmental stage and needs. From more playful, rapport-building sessions to practicing highly structured tools that can be applied in daily life, we stay flexible and focused on what works best for your child and your family.
Here are a few of the core approaches used in our work:
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Children
CBT is a practical and effective therapy that helps children connect their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It enables children to recognize unhelpful thought patterns and develop new ways to respond to challenging situations. We use age-appropriate CBT strategies that incorporate the use of visual aids, roleplay, games or other interactive techniques.
CBT can help children:
- Identify and understand feelings
- Learn relaxation techniques
- Challenge anxious and negative thoughts
- Gradually face fears in small, supported steps
- Develop self-confidence
- Practice problem solving
- Regulate emotions
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)
For children displaying oppositional behavior, tantrums, or defiance, BPT focuses on giving caregivers the tools they need to respond to these behaviors more effectively. Sometimes a shift in how parents respond is what opens the door for change. BPT helps make those shifts practical and sustainable.
We work closely with parents to:
- Understand the “why” underlying a child’s behavior
- Establish consistent expectations and routines
- Use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors
- Respond calmly and confidently to challenging behaviors
- Provide immediate and consistent consequences
- Strengthen the parent-child relationship

What to Expect During Child Therapy
We begin with a thorough intake process with parents or caregivers to gain a clear understanding of your child’s strengths, challenges, and family dynamics. This allows us to create a thoughtful, individualized plan tailored to your child’s needs.
Based on your child’s age and specific concerns, we may recommend weekly individual therapy for your child, parent-focused support, such as SPACE or Behavioral Parent Training (BPT), or a combination of approaches. Throughout the process, we work closely with families to ensure support feels collaborative, practical, and effective.
Throughout your child’s therapy, you can expect:
- Goals tailored to your child’s unique needs
- A warm, developmentally informed approach
- Ongoing parent involvement to reinforce growth and progress
- A therapist working alongside you to support positive changes at home
- Collaboration with your child’s school or other providers when appropriate
