Helping Children Build Confidence, Resilience, and Coping Skills

Parenting isn’t easy, especially when your child is struggling in ways you can’t quite understand. Maybe they seem more anxious, more irritable, or just not quite themselves. You might be wondering what’s going on beneath the surface and how to help them through it.

The compassionate child therapists at Positive Development Psychology work with families in Mt. Kisco and throughout Westchester County to support children and teens as they navigate emotional, social, and behavioral challenges. Whether your child is experiencing anxiety, having difficulty adjusting to a transition, or having intense meltdowns, we offer a warm and welcoming space where your child can feel safe, understood, and supported, and where your whole family can begin to move forward together. We partner closely with parents, offering guidance, insight, and practical tools so you can better understand what your child is going through and feel confident supporting them at home.

Why Parents Consider Child Therapy

Children express their emotions in many ways. Some might withdraw or silently worry. Others might act out, resist routines, or seem more irritable than usual. These behaviors are not signs of failure, they are signals that a child may need extra support. With the right guidance, children can start to feel more secure, understood, and prepared to handle life’s challenges.

We often support families who are navigating:

  • Anxiety, excessive worries, or specific fears
  • Strong emotions or increased sensitivity
  • Behavioral struggles at home or school
  • Difficulty with transitions or changes in routine
  • Low self-confidence or perfectionistic tendencies
  • School avoidance or reluctance to participate in activities

Therapy is not about changing who your child is; it is a way to provide them with the tools, space, and support they need to feel more confident and resilient in their daily lives.

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is designed for families with children who struggle with oppositional behavior, frequent tantrums, or defiance. This approach focuses on helping caregivers develop effective strategies to respond to challenging behaviors in supportive and consistent ways.

Sometimes, small changes in how parents respond can create meaningful changes in a child’s behavior. BPT helps parents learn practical tools that encourage positive behavior while fostering a calmer, more pleasant home environment.

In BPT, we work closely with parents to:

  • Understand the reasons behind their child’s behavior
  • Establish clear expectations, structure, and routines
  • Use positive reinforcement to promote desired behaviors
  • Stay calm and confident when responding to challenging behaviors
  • Provide immediate and consistent consequences
  • Strengthen the parent-child relationship

Our Approach to Child Therapy for Mt. Kisco Families

Every child is unique, and our approach reflects that. We take the time to really understand your child’s personality, strengths, sensitivities, and the patterns that may be shaping their experiences at home, at school, and with peers. From there, we develop a thoughtful, individualized treatment plan grounded in evidence-based, child-centered approaches. Our work is tailored to your child’s developmental stage and specific needs, while building on what they already do well.

Some of the core frameworks we use include:

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Children

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a practical and evidence-based approach that helps children understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. Through CBT, children learn to recognize unhelpful thought patterns and develop healthier ways to respond to challenges.

Sessions are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate. Therapists may use visual aids, role-playing, games, and other interactive activities to help children learn new skills in a way that feels comfortable.

CBT can help children:

  • Identify and understand their emotions
  • Learn relaxation techniques
  • Recognize and challenge anxious or negative thoughts
  • Gradually face fears with support and guidance
  • Build self-confidence
  • Strengthen problem-solving skills
  • Develop healthy ways to manage strong feelings

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)

We offer Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), a research-based, parent-focused anxiety treatment developed at the Yale Child Study Center. Unlike traditional therapy, SPACE works primarily with parents. In most cases, children do not need to attend sessions. By focusing on changes in parental responses to anxiety, this approach often creates meaningful and lasting improvements — either on its own or alongside individual therapy. SPACE empowers parents with practical tools and creates change within the family that helps children feel braver and more capable over time. Parent sessions can also be conducted conveniently online, making it easier to fit support into busy family schedules.

In SPACE, we partner with parents to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of their child’s anxiety
  • Recognize and gently reduce accommodations that may unintentionally reinforce anxiety
  • Practice supportive responses that communicate belief in their child’s ability to cope
  • Encourage gradual independence and bravery

A Personalized, Family-Centered Approach to Child Therapy

The first step is an in-depth conversation to gather important background information and to understand your child’s needs, your family dynamics, and what matters most to you. From there, we work together to create a treatment plan that feels thoughtful, practical, and tailored to your family.

Depending on your child’s age and goals, we may recommend:

  • Weekly individual therapy sessions with your child
  • Parent-based approaches such as SPACE or BPT
  • A blended approach incorporating coping skills for your child and practical parenting strategies

Throughout the process, we maintain regular communication with parents and adjust the treatment plan as needed. You’ll also receive practical tools to support your child at home.

You can expect:

  • A warm, non-judgmental environment
  • Clear goals based on your family’s needs and priorities
  • A therapist who works collaboratively with you
  • Practical strategies your family can use in everyday situations
  • Support in helping your child build emotional awareness and coping skills
  • Collaboration with school staff or other clinicians when helpful

Supporting Mt. Kisco Families with In-Person Child Therapy

Located in Mt. Kisco, we support families across Westchester County through both in-person and virtual therapy sessions. Many of the families we work with live in Armonk, Bedford, Katonah, and other surrounding towns. Our flexible scheduling makes it easier for busy families to fit therapy into their routines while still receiving high-quality support.

Families can choose the format that works best for them. Some prefer to visit our office in Mt. Kisco, while others appreciate the convenience and flexibility of meeting virtually from home. Parent-focused approaches, such as SPACE and BPT, adapt especially well to virtual care. Virtual sessions can also feel natural and engaging for some children, who are already comfortable communicating through screens.
